How to Decorate With Vintage Landscape Art

There is something about a vintage landscape painting that can make a room feel warmer almost immediately. Maybe it is the muted colors, the imperfect frame, or just the feeling that you are looking at a little piece of somewhere else.

Landscape art has always been one of my favorite ways to bring some character into a home. It feels timeless without feeling too formal, and I love that it can work in so many different kinds of spaces.

You don't have to live in an old farmhouse or have a traditional home to use it, either. A vintage landscape can look just as beautiful in a simple room with neutral colors and more modern furniture. I actually think that contrast is part of what makes it so interesting.

I especially love landscapes with soft greens, warm browns, faded blues, and creamy colors. They work so naturally with things like wood, linen, and woven materials. If your room is already pretty neutral, a landscape can bring in several colors at once without making the room feel busy.

And then there is the frame.

I think the frame can completely change how a piece feels. An old wood frame can make a painting feel like something you found at an estate sale or brought home from a flea market, while a simple dark frame can make it feel a little more refined. I don't think the frame needs to perfectly match everything else in the room. Actually, I usually like it better when it doesn't.

One of my favorite places for landscape art is above a bed. There is something really peaceful about a muted landscape paired with warm ivory bedding, natural wood, and a few soft green accents. It makes the room feel quiet without being boring.

In a living room, a larger landscape can work beautifully above a sofa, console, or fireplace. If you have a few smaller pieces, you can group them together instead of spreading them around the room. I love a little collection of landscapes with frames that aren't exactly the same. It makes the whole thing feel like it was collected rather than purchased as a set.

And don't forget about the dining room or kitchen.

A small landscape leaning against a backsplash or sitting on a shelf can make a very functional space feel a little more personal. In a dining room, I love the combination of an old landscape, a wooden table, and simple linen. It has that relaxed feeling that makes you want to sit down and stay for a while.

You also don't have to find an actual antique. There are plenty of vintage-inspired prints that can give you the same feeling, and sometimes that makes it much easier to find exactly the colors or size that work in your space.

When you are choosing one, I would worry much less about whether it is valuable and much more about whether you actually love it. Look for colors that already exist in your room. Pay attention to the frame. And if you find something that makes you stop and look at it for a minute, that's probably a pretty good sign.

I think that is what I love about decorating with vintage pieces in general. Your home doesn't need to look like a perfectly preserved historic house. It should feel like your home, with little pieces of the things you love mixed in.

A landscape painting can be one of those pieces.

It can bring a little history, a little color, and a feeling of somewhere else into an ordinary room.

And sometimes that is all a room needs.
