The Lighting Mistakes That Make a Home Feel Cold
Sometimes a room can have beautiful furniture, warm colors, and plenty of personality, but still feel a little off.
I've found that lighting is often the reason.
We tend to think about lighting as something purely functional. We need to be able to see, so we turn on the lights. But lighting can completely change the atmosphere of a room, especially once the sun goes down.
A few small changes can make a bigger difference than you'd expect.
Relying Only on Overhead Lighting
A single ceiling light can make a room feel flat and overly bright.
Instead, try bringing light into different areas of the room. A table lamp, floor lamp, or even a small lamp on a shelf can create little pockets of light that make the room feel much more inviting.
You don't need every light on at once. That's part of the point.
Choosing Bulbs That Are Too Cool
This is one of the easiest mistakes to fix.
Very cool white bulbs can make a room feel harsh, particularly in living rooms, bedrooms, and dining spaces. I usually prefer warmer bulbs in the rooms where I want a softer evening atmosphere.
The difference can be surprisingly noticeable.
Before buying another piece of furniture or changing your decor, try changing the bulbs you already have.
Making the Room Too Bright
I've realized that I don't actually want every corner of my house brightly lit at night.
A little darkness is a good thing.
When some areas are softly lit and others are left darker, the room has more depth. Lamps become little points of interest instead of everything being illuminated equally.
Your house doesn't need to look like a department store after sunset.
Ignoring Dark Corners
On the other hand, there are some areas that can use a little help.
A dark corner beside a chair or an empty section of a console can make a room feel unfinished. A small lamp can completely change that without adding much else.
Sometimes you don't need more decor. You just need to give an overlooked part of the room a little attention.
Only Thinking About How the Room Looks During the Day
Natural light does a lot of the work during the day, so it's easy to forget about what happens after dark.
Try paying attention to your rooms in the evening.
Turn off the overhead lights and use your lamps instead. Notice which areas feel too dark and which ones suddenly look beautiful.
You may find that your room looks completely different at night, and that's okay. A home doesn't need to look exactly the same at every hour of the day.
Lighting Should Add Something to the Room
I love when a lamp is more than just something plugged into an outlet.
The shape of the lamp, the shade, the material, and even the quality of the light can become part of the room.
A simple lamp on a side table can add height and character. A floor lamp can make an empty corner feel intentional. Even an old lamp you've had for years can become one of those little details that makes a room feel like yours.
Look at Your Lighting Before You Change Your Decor
If a room has been feeling a little cold or unfinished, don't automatically assume you need new furniture or more accessories.
Try changing the lighting first.
Swap a few bulbs. Add a lamp. Turn off the overhead light. Let some areas stay darker.
Sometimes the room doesn't need anything else.
It just needs to be seen a little differently.
