5 Decor Accents That Make a Home Feel Warmer and More Collected

A home can have beautiful furniture and still feel like something is missing. Sometimes it isn't another large piece that the room needs. It might just need a few smaller things that make the space feel warmer and more like you.

I have always loved rooms that look like they were collected over time. Not everything matches, and not everything came from the same store. There might be an old frame next to a newer lamp, a woven basket tucked under a console, or a stack of books sitting beside a piece of pottery. I like when you can look around a room and see little pieces of someone's life in it.

Artwork is one of my favorite ways to do this. A vintage landscape, an old botanical print, or even a simple piece with a slightly weathered frame can completely change a room. It doesn't have to be expensive or particularly important. Sometimes the thing you find at a thrift store for a few dollars ends up being the piece that gives the room its personality.

Natural baskets are another easy one. I love the texture they bring into a room, especially when everything else is a little more simple. And they are actually useful, which is always a bonus. You can use one for blankets in the living room, towels in the bathroom, or toys in a child's room. Or you can leave it empty and let it sit next to a piece of furniture. I think natural materials have a way of making a room feel a little less polished and a little more comfortable.

Then there are textiles. A linen throw tossed over a chair or the end of a sofa can make you want to actually sit down. I don't think you need a million pillows and blankets to make a room cozy. Sometimes it is just about having a few things with different textures that make the space feel comfortable.

I also love simple table linens. A linen runner or a soft cotton tablecloth can make an everyday dining area feel a little more special without making it feel formal. There is something about a table with natural fabric, simple dishes, and a little vase of flowers that makes an ordinary dinner feel like something worth sitting down for.

And then there are the things that don't really have a purpose at all. A handmade ceramic bowl, an old wooden candlestick, a piece of pottery, or some little object you found and couldn't leave behind. These are probably some of my favorite things to put in a room because they are what make it feel like your home instead of a room you copied from a catalog.

I don't think you need to fill every empty surface, either. Actually, I think leaving some space is just as important as adding things. You want to be able to notice the things you love. A few pieces that mean something to you will always feel better than a shelf full of things you bought just because it looked empty.

I think that is really the difference between a home that feels collected and one that just feels decorated. The pieces have a reason for being there. And sometimes that reason is simply that you love them.

Look for things with texture, age, natural materials, or a story. Mix old with new. Let wood sit next to linen. Put something handmade beside something simple and modern. You don't have to worry so much about everything matching.

A home doesn't usually become warm and inviting all at once. It happens slowly. It happens through the things we find, inherit, save, and bring home because we just really like them.

You don't need more stuff to make your home beautiful.

You just need a few things that feel like you.
